This Bushtops pairing at a glance

Bushtops is the standard-bearer for “indulgent” wild-luxury — every tent has a hot tub on its private deck, and soaking there facing the plains while animals wander past is its most iconic image. This trip stays with one brand two ways: Serengeti Bushtops is the permanent flagship — hot tub, wraparound wooden deck, butler, luxury that never wavers; Roving Bushtops is a mobile camp “on wheels,” chasing the migration and always pitched closest to the herds. The same northern crossing grounds, two ways to stay.

Is it right for you?

A good fit

Honeymooners and couples who want “pure indulgence + photogenic”; guests who treat the private hot tub, butler service and all-inclusive champagne as the core experience; anyone who wants the Mara River crossing without flying back and forth between camps (the two are just 40 minutes apart by road).

Less of a fit

Guests who want to cover several regions of the Serengeti in one trip (all 5 nights here are in the north); budget-sensitive guests.

For both, we have better alternatives — just ask your consultant.

What a stay looks like

Northern Serengeti · permanent flagship camp

Serengeti Bushtops

A permanent camp about 24 km from the Mara River, famous for the hot tub on its private deck.

Private deck pool · sunset
The signature scene — a pool on your private wooden deck, a soak at sunset, the plains laid out below.
Raised tent · deck at dusk
A large raised tent with a wraparound wooden deck, warm lamps glowing at nightfall, tucked among the boulders and trees.
Private lantern-lit dinner on a kopje
At dusk atop a boulder kopje, dozens of kerosene lanterns — and a lantern-hung tree — light a private dinner table set just for the two of you, high above the plains.
Mara River crossing
The headline act — thousands of wildebeest pour across the Mara River, just about 24 km from camp.
Northern Serengeti · mobile camp

Roving Bushtops

A mobile camp “on wheels,” pitched in the north from July to October, just 15 minutes from the Mara River.

Sundowner on a boulder
Climb a great boulder for the sunset — lanterns, champagne, boundless grassland at your feet.
Tent + deck · sunset
Open the tent and there’s the plains; watch the sun drop from the deck lounger, the herds perhaps not far off.
Camp panorama · sunset
A few tents pitched on the open plains — the mobile camp relocates just once a season with the migration, which is exactly how it can sit in prime spots right up against the herds.
Mess tent + campfire
The mess tent glowing warm, a campfire out front — a mobile camp that cuts no corners.

When to come: July–October

Both camps sit in the north, right on Mara River crossing season:

July–October, the wildebeest armies reach the north.

They gather at the Mara River and plunge into the rapids — safari’s most breathtaking scene, and this window only.

One permanent, one mobile, covering the same crossing grounds.

Serengeti Bushtops is about 24 km from the river; Roving is closer still, just 15 minutes away — one to watch steadily from the tub, the other to chase right up against the herds.

This pairing isn’t forced: Bushtops’ own 2024 northern base for Roving was placed about 40 minutes’ drive from Serengeti Bushtops, expressly so the two Tanzania camps combine easily into one trip — so this is the brand’s own design. A mobile camp’s exact arrival dates shift slightly year to year; the precise location follows that year’s arrangements.

The same northern crossing grounds — one to watch steadily from the tub, one to chase right up against the herds — both ways of staying at Bushtops in a single trip.
