This pairing at a glance

One trip, two completely different kinds of wild-luxury: Grumeti River Lodge is a contemporary-design flagship on the river — woven domed ceilings, open decks, hippos wallowing right below; Serengeti Under Canvas is a mobile tented camp that follows the migration — lanterns, Persian rugs, old-world explorer glamour, relocating five times a year to stay closest to the herds. One is “staying superbly well,” the other is “staying inside the migration.”

Is it right for you?

A good fit

Guests who want to experience top-tier brands at better value; those who want both a classic explorer tent and a contemporary-design flagship in one trip; keen travellers who want to be as close to the herds as possible; honeymoons, anniversaries and families.

Less of a fit

Guests who can’t accept a mobile tented camp (Under Canvas is a mobile tented camp — en-suite bathroom and flush toilet, but less comfort than a permanent camp).

For them, we have better alternatives — just ask your consultant.

What a stay looks like

Western Serengeti · on the Grumeti River

andBeyond Grumeti River Lodge

A contemporary-design flagship on the river, turning African craft into architecture.

Suite interior · woven dome / open deck
A woven timber dome, African patterns and a deck that opens fully outward — the ceiling of contemporary wild-luxury.
Riverside circular firepit at sunset
A sunken circular firepit by the river — sit down as the sunset ignites, hippos wallowing right below.
Riverside afternoon tea · butler service
Your private butler brings afternoon tea to the river’s edge — acacias above, a pod of dozing hippos below.
Game drive · lioness with cubs
On a drive you meet a lioness leading a litter of cubs across the plains — the western corridor’s resident wildlife runs dense.
Mobile tented camp · moves with the migration

andBeyond Serengeti Under Canvas

This camp isn’t fixed. It relocates five times a year, always pitched closest to the herds — the month you come decides which end of the Serengeti you sleep in.

Tent interior · looking onto the plains
Open the tent and there’s the plains — a brass bed, wool blankets, old-world explorer romance, sleeping beside the herds.
Lounge tent · lanterns / Persian rugs
The lounge tent glows with lanterns — Persian rugs, leather sofas, a backgammon set: 1920s expedition glamour.
Firelit dinner under the stars
Tables laid beneath the acacias, lanterns trailing into the grass, the campfire up and dinner served.
Game drive · cheetah passing the vehicle
Nine tents, a private guide, a cheetah strolling right past the vehicle — few people, the scene all yours.

When to come: two seasons, two kinds of spectacle

This pairing has two golden windows a year — and they show you completely different things:

🌱Jan–Mar|Calving season

Under Canvas pitches in the southern Ndutu.

Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves are born on the southern short-grass plains, drawing in lion, leopard and cheetah alike — life and death in one frame, the most dramatic scene of the year.

Your nights at Grumeti River Lodge.

The western corridor’s resident wildlife plus hippos, crocodiles and elephants — quiet, uncrowded, a different rhythm from the calving grounds.

🌊Jun–Oct|Crossing season

Under Canvas moves north with the migration.

From June to mid-July the camp sits in the western Grumeti, facing the Grumeti River crossings; after mid-July it moves to Kogatende in the north for the famous Mara River crossings. Come in a different month and you see a different river.

Your nights at Grumeti River Lodge.

Around June the herds are walking the western corridor, almost at the door; after July they head north and the lodge shifts to resident wildlife and quiet, private game viewing.

About camp location: Under Canvas’s pitches are planned in advance around the migration and adjusted slightly each year; the camp does not move during your stay. Exact location is per that year’s arrangements.
