A dozen or so ultra-luxury tents, an infinity pool with a hot tub, a wood stove and an open bathtub in the tent: the best game-viewing address, with nothing given up on the stay.

Why we chose it

The centre is the most dependable year-round game-viewing area in the Serengeti, and Nyaruswiga sits in the middle of it, right by the Seronera river and the airstrip — you drive out into dense, year-round game rather than spending your days getting to it. The camp itself is properly Ultra-luxury: teak beds, goose-down duvets, a wood-burning stove, an open bathtub, a separate en-suite and an outdoor shower, with a two-level infinity pool, a hot tub and a star deck at the main camp, and food and service kept at a high standard throughout. It puts the best position and a genuinely luxurious stay in the same place, which is why it is our first choice in the central Serengeti at this tier.

If it is full

· Namiri Plains (further east in the centre; the classic cheetah plains with few vehicles, wilder and more remote)

The pool at the main camp works on two levels: the outer infinity pool carries the water right to the edge of the timber deck, with a separate hot tub set inside it; loungers and a parasol on the right, and over the log fence on the left the central Serengeti runs out to distant hills. This is the "two-level infinity pool with a hot tub" of the copy.

Inside a tent (this is the Emperor): a teak four-poster under netting, a wood-burning stove directly opposite, and on the left a copper bathtub — open, standing in the living space rather than shut away. A hide rug on the floor, two old travelling trunks at the foot of the bed, a chandelier overhead.

Dinner outdoors: one long table under white linen, leather director’s chairs down both sides, silver candelabra lit, and hurricane lamps hung from the trees and set out on the ground; a log-fenced lounge area with an iron fire bowl on the left, and the plains at dusk just past the rail on the right.

A sundowner set up straight out on the grass: a rug, cushions and a few folding chairs, a drinks trolley and cold bottles to one side, a ring of hurricane lamps lighting the patch — and a telescope on its tripod at the left. Rain cloud is building on the horizon, which is what green-season evenings look like.
