Ngorongoro Serena Lodge
Its great advantage is close to irreplaceable: it is built on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater itself, and every room faces the crater — open the balcony door and the whole caldera is in front of you.
Why we chose it
Very few hotels genuinely sit on the rim, and those that share this class of crater view have usually priced themselves into the Luxury tier. That is precisely what makes the Ngorongoro Serena unusual: it has an outlook that competes with far more expensive lodges while keeping its price within reason. Add Serena’s consistently mature service, food and operation and the whole thing is very complete. In recent guest reviews its location scores full marks, with comfort and cleanliness close behind.
So within this tier the logic is blunt: anything with a comparable view generally costs a great deal more, and anything at a comparable price rarely has a view to match.
What to know
Its biggest drawback is really this: it is hard to get. Rim hotels are few to begin with, and the Serena sits at a very competitive price point, so rooms go quickly in high season. Good Ngorongoro lodges generally want booking months ahead in season, and the most popular dates earlier still.
It has also been running for many years, and the decor is traditional safari rather than new-wave boutique. But here what matters is plainly not how new the room is — it is that you can see the Ngorongoro Crater from it.
If it is full
Lion's Paw Camp and Ngorongoro Rim Lodge — both Signature-tier properties on the Ngorongoro crater rim, our usual stand-ins when this one is full.
