This is the most significant opening on the rim of Ngorongoro in over a decade. It does not compete on "sleeping on the rim" — instead it moves a complete top-tier hotel, and the crater’s only indoor heated pool, into the quieter forest on the eastern side: private, calm, and faster into the crater than anyone else.

Why we chose it

Position is one of its biggest advantages. The lodge sits on the east side of the crater near the relatively quiet Lemala descent road, so you are on the crater floor in 10–15 minutes and start your game drive ahead of the traffic coming down the western side; the return is more relaxed too. Compared with the busy western entrance, coming and going on this side is far quieter, which is also why the setting itself is so peaceful.

Opened in 2025, the hardware is genuinely Ultra-luxury. The 20 suites are very large, with a separate sitting area, a picture-window bathtub, a generous bathroom and a wood-burning stove; Ngorongoro nights are cold, so there are winter duvets and hot water bottles, and a "hidden daybed" by the fire for reading — turning the cold of the highlands into the pleasure of sitting by a fire. The public areas hold the only indoor heated pool in Ngorongoro, a separate forest spa, a bar and lounge, and an outdoor fire terrace where watching dusk settle over the forest and highlands is an experience in its own right.

Lemala is a Tanzanian safari brand we already rate (Mpingo Ridge in Tarangire and Kuria Hills in the north, both on your itinerary, are the same house), and Osonjoi’s early reputation is excellent: comfortable rooms, very good food, and attentive, personal service are the points recent reviews agree on almost without exception.

Our verdict

What makes Osonjoi unusual is that it stops "staying on the rim of Ngorongoro" from being a thing you pay for in comfort. The position is good enough, the rooms genuinely luxurious, the service and food at Ultra-luxury level, with memorable details like the wood stoves and the heated pool on top. Until the legendary Crater Lodge reopens, if you want one hotel in Ngorongoro that truly matches an Ultra-luxury itinerary, Osonjoi is our clear choice.

Dawn from the deck of a room: the sun coming up behind a single tree, ridge after ridge of forest falling away on the eastern side of Ngorongoro, and two woven armchairs with a tree-stump table on the deck. This side is well away from the traffic on the west — that is what "quiet and private" means here.

A suite bedroom: a four-poster hung with dusty-pink netting, a pale timber headboard that runs on into joinery and bedside units, two long benches at the foot of the bed and a woven rug over dark timber floors. The sliding door on the left opens to the bathroom — twin stone basins, a full-width mirror, robes hanging beside it. The lodge opened in 2025, and the fit-out shows it.

The lounge: a cluster of woven globe pendants overhead, patterned sofas drawn around a low black table, and a lit display wall of hand-thrown terracotta on the right, with a wood-burning stove standing in the alcove in the middle. The doors are folded right back to mist-filled forest and the deck — which is precisely the "sitting here in the evening as dusk settles over the forest and highlands" the copy describes.

The only indoor heated pool in Ngorongoro: a fully glazed roof carried on timber beams, hand-thrown terracotta pots set around the edge, a wood-burning stove against the wall on the right, and highland forest through the openings on both sides. Ngorongoro is high and cold — putting the pool indoors means you can still swim on a chilly day.

This one is an architectural rendering, not a photograph: dark timber volumes raised on the slope around a circular public deck, the whole thing set into the forest canopy. It is here because nothing else shows the scale of the lodge and how it sits in this forest as clearly.
