Legendary Lodge

Ultra-luxuryArusha

At the Ultra-luxury tier we would rather the Arusha night was not just "land, and find somewhere good to sleep". Legendary makes it feel as though the trip starts the moment you arrive in Arusha.

Why we chose it

We rate it among the best hotels in Arusha, hidden inside a coffee estate with a century of history. One moment you are in Arusha traffic; once through the gates it turns into wide lawns, mature trees, coffee fields and very quiet gardens. There are only 12 free-standing cottages spread through the grounds, so even at full occupancy it never feels like a big hotel.

The rooms are properly Ultra-luxury: generous in size, each with its own veranda and sitting area, plus a fireplace, a four-poster bed, a deep tub, a rain shower and air conditioning. The style is not the overwrought contemporary look of a new build but a beautifully kept East African estate house — wooden floors, fireplaces, older furniture, set in a garden that has had decades to mature.

We particularly like how it works at the start or the end of a safari. Straight off a long flight you can eat slowly in the garden, have a massage, sit by the pool; with energy left, walk or cycle the estate, or go and look at the coffee. Coming back for a final night lets the trip wind down properly rather than running from the bush straight to the airport. What really earns it this tier, though, is the service and food: reviews do not just say the staff are friendly — they describe meals moved to suit your timing and state, very early breakfasts arranged, massages fitted in, with the kitchen consistently well regarded.

Our verdict

The luxury at Legendary Lodge is not the gilded kind. What is genuinely expensive here is a large estate with barely a dozen rooms, private space enough, beautifully mature surroundings, and people who take real care of every detail. Plenty of Arusha hotels give you a comfortable night; Legendary makes you feel the Ultra-luxury safari began the moment you landed.

If it is full

Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge (the Luxury tier in Arusha, with a similar estate character — a step down when Legendary is full, but a dependable one).

The estate from the air in evening light: tiled cottages among lawns and old trees
The whole estate in evening light: tile-roofed cottages spread out between broad lawns and mature trees, jacarandas in full lilac flower standing over the roofs, and rows of coffee beyond. If you want to see what "12 cottages spread through the grounds" means, look from above.
The front of one cottage: tiled roof, brick chimney, timber-columned veranda
The front of one cottage: a tiled roof, a veranda on timber columns, dark louvred shutters — and that brick chimney on the roof is the flue for the fireplace inside. Clipped ball hedges and lawn in front, a gardener raking leaves: that level of upkeep is simply the daily routine here.
Inside a room: boarded ceiling, four-poster under netting, sitting corner by the windows
Inside a room: a boarded timber ceiling, a dark four-poster hung with white netting, hardwood floors and a sisal rug; in the corner by the windows an old-fashioned wooden steamer chair, an armchair and a footstool, with banana leaves from the garden just outside. The furniture speaks of an old estate, not a showy new hotel.
The long rectangular pool with rain clouds massing behind
The pool is a plain long rectangle with loungers and parasols down both sides and creeper covering the veranda of the tiled building on the left. A heavy bank of rain cloud was building when this was taken — Arusha sits high, afternoons often look like this, and that is exactly when you go back and light the fire.
