It resolves the real dilemma of staying in Ndutu: you want the best position for the calving season, but you would rather not pay for it in comfort. Here neither one is compromised.

Why we chose it

Ndutu’s true season is short, which is why so much of the accommodation here is seasonal mobile camping. That is exactly where this lodge earns its place: it holds a good position in the heart of Ndutu while offering comfort well above a mobile camp. The rooms are spacious, with permanent bathrooms, far more reliable hot water and proper hotel facilities, plus a pool and genuinely comfortable public areas — no giving up game-viewing position for comfort, and no accepting the relatively rough conditions of a mobile camp in order to sleep near the herds.

Position is one of its most important selling points. In calving season it sits in very good game-viewing country, and you can explore the surrounding plains using the lodge as your base. It is unfenced: zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and even large predators may appear nearby, so the sense of wilderness stays strong even while you are in the lodge. Our own guests have consistently reported well on the service and the food, which matches the weight of recent guest reviews.

What to know

It is far more comfortable than a mobile camp, but it is still a tented lodge in the bush and should not be held to the standard of a city resort: there is no air conditioning in the rooms — ceiling fans do the work — and the power supply has the character of a wilderness lodge.

Because the camp is unfenced, insects and small animals do occasionally find their way into the guest areas, and staff escort you to and from your room after dark. That is simply the other side of sleeping in the heart of Ndutu, and for most guests who came for the calving season it reads as authenticity rather than inconvenience.

If it is full

Ndutu Safari Lodge — the classic long-established permanent lodge at Ndutu, of comparable standing; our usual stand-in when this one is full.

Each room has its own veranda: thatch overhead, a rustic timber rail, two wicker chairs, and the plain and a line of acacias straight ahead. Ndutu is green in the rains — and if you are lucky, a rainbow comes with it.

This is what “unfenced” actually means: a row of thatched rooms, zebra grazing on the grass in front of them, and nothing in between. They were here first; the lodge was simply built alongside.

The room as it is: a tented structure, but inside it a four-poster under nets, wooden floors, a writing desk, a ceiling fan, and glass doors straight out to the veranda. The comfort over a mobile camp lives in details like these.
