Laba Grumeti Art Lodge

LuxuryWestern Serengeti

A rare boutique choice in the Western Corridor: alone on a hilltop with no other lodge in sight, and itself a modern African art gallery you can sleep in — private, expansive, and with a point of view.

Why we chose it

It sits on a secluded ridge in the Western Serengeti with a sweeping outlook over the whole Grumeti ecosystem, and there is no other lodge anywhere in view. That sense of having the plains to yourself is something most lodges at this price in the west cannot offer. Around June each year the migration moves through the Western Corridor and across the Grumeti River, and you are staying on the high ground above its path, watching it pass below.

What truly sets it apart is the way it fuses top-end accommodation with contemporary African art. There are only 12 tented suites, raised on timber platforms, each with a wooden deck, a king bed, a separate bath and shower, and a dressing room — and the lodge displays 46 works by 10 African artists, so every suite feels like a small gallery of its own. The public areas have a 22-metre infinity pool, a spa, a gym and an open lounge; the food is all-inclusive and built around organic produce, much of it from the lodge’s own garden, and even the linen and bath products are organic. This is not a standardised safari lodge but a piece of work with an author, a taste and a stance — for guests who want luxury comfort and a stay that is genuinely different.

Before you book

The lodge accepts children aged 5 and over, and a tent sleeps at most 2 adults (a third guest must be under 16).

Our verdict

In the west it is hard to find a lodge with both a vast, private position and a strong character of its own; Laba Grumeti is close to the only one. It turns "staying in the wilds of the Western Corridor" into an experience with an artistic edge — which is why we chose it for the Luxury tier in the west.

If it is full

The infinity pool on the ridge, with plains beyond
The infinity pool follows the curve of the ridge: a row of loungers and terracotta parasols on the deck, and past the water’s edge a drop, then open savannah running out to the hills.
A four-poster bed inside a tented suite
Inside a tented suite: a large bed hung with cream drapes under the canvas roof, a ceiling fan, a wall of wooden shingles and hand-thrown ceramic lamps. The tent’s side wall opens fully onto the timber deck.
The open lounge above the plains
The open lounge: two huge pendant lamps of woven wooden scales overhead, a curved sofa, a tree-trunk table and leather pouffes on the rugs. Three sides have no walls, so the plains and distant hills are the backdrop.
Stone wall, pool and tent above the Grumeti plains
Looking down the slope: a dry-stone wall curves with the hill around the pool and parasols, a boardwalk leads off to a tent on the right, and beyond the wall the ground falls away to the Grumeti plains — with no other lodge in sight.
