One word: dependable. Good location, beautiful grounds, seasoned service, and a quiet setting on the shore of Lake Duluti — as the opening or closing night of a safari, it gets very nearly everything right.

Why we chose it

Its real strength is how well the location and the setting work together. It is close enough to Arusha to make an easy start on the northern circuit, yet it sits on the quiet shore of Lake Duluti, deeply planted and entirely free of the noise of a city hotel. Whether you have just landed and want one good night of sleep, or you are coming off safari and need to reset, it suits both.

The lake is a genuine bonus: birdlife is abundant, you can walk the shoreline, and you can take a canoe out. It suits guests who like birding, or who want a little easy time outdoors without travelling any further to get it.

And it is, after all, a mature Serena property — service, food, room upkeep and day-to-day operation are all steady. It may not surprise you, but it rarely goes wrong either, and for the nights either side of a safari that matters more than it sounds. Recent guest feedback on the grounds, service, food and room comfort has been consistent.

What to know

It shows its age a little. The hotel began life as an old coffee estate, and the architecture and interiors stay traditional — characterful and settled, but not the new-build, pared-back, design-led kind of hotel, and a few fittings have clearly been in service a while.

For most safari guests that is rarely a problem. You will not spend long in the room; what this night actually needs to be is quiet, comfortable and restful, and on all three it delivers.

If it is full

Mount Meru Game Lodge — an estate-style hotel out towards Usa River with its own small wildlife sanctuary; quiet, green, and close in character to the Serena. Our usual stand-in when this one is full.

Rooms are thatched stone cottages set out through the garden, with flagstone paths running between lawn and flowerbeds and a wooden sign at the junction reading “Room No 7–12”. Not a door at the end of a corridor — a walk back to your own patch of garden.

The main building is the old estate house — stone walls, terracotta roof. From the terrace, past the lawn, is Lake Duluti and the wooded hills on the far shore. “Lakeside” is not marketing here; it is what is outside the window.

The kitchen brigade sets up and cooks at the water’s edge, with the tables a few steps away under a thatched gazebo and Lake Duluti and its wooded hillside opposite. This is the meal the hotel is proudest of.

The room as it is: a curved wall, a leaded bay window, a wooden writing desk, terracotta tiles underfoot, warm throughout. Traditional rather than minimal — but easy to settle into.
