What makes Arusha Coffee Lodge different is that the whole hotel sits inside one of Tanzania’s largest coffee estates. You come in from a noisy city and everything goes quiet: thirty free-standing cottages scattered among evergreen coffee bushes and gardens, arranged around an early-1900s plantation house, with the smell of fresh coffee in the air. This is not a hotel for "somewhere to sleep before and after the safari" — it is worth leaving time for.

The rooms have character too. The cottages are generous, each with its own fireplace; the suites add a rain shower, a deep tub and a private terrace with a fire pit. Arusha nights are cool, and once the fire is lit the mood is exactly right. It reads as a mature, lived-in African plantation, not showy luxury. There is also plenty to do on site: walk the estate and follow coffee from picking to roasting, then taste a cup you made yourself; browse the Trader’s Walk boutiques; or visit Shanga, a social enterprise workshop employing artisans with disabilities who work in recycled materials, and watch them make it in front of you. Ideal for guests who would rather not step off a plane straight into a hard-driving itinerary, or who want one soft night after the safari.
